Special General Meeting to elect directors

Happy City is selecting new interim Directors for its Board at a Special General Meeting on Thursday, June 22 at 19:30. This will be an online-only event and since its sole purpose is to elect the new Directors, it should be short.

We’ll be voting for six Directors to serve until the next Annual General Meeting in the Fall. If you know anyone who is passionate about civic engagement and making St. John’s a better place, and would like the opportunity to learn more about and contribute to a dynamic civic organization at board level without a long term commitment, urge them to nominate themselves. (Maybe that person is you!). See below for more details.

If you are planning to attend, please register for the event here by 17:00, June 22.

Happy City St. John’s is a non-profit which seeks to encourage, inform and facilitate civic dialogue in our city.

Board members are a key part of shaping and executing the work of Happy City St. John’s. They meet monthly, with additional committee meetings to plan for and implement events and campaigns.
Members of the Board are encouraged to bring forward ambitious ideas for Happy City projects, and are given the opportunity to work with our energetic team to bring those ideas to fruition. They are expected to attend at least 50% of board meetings, unless accommodations are agreed upon by the Chair. Meetings may be online or face to face. Happy City St. John’s has an active volunteer board, and members should expect to spend at least 10-15 hours per month on Happy City duties.

We are seeking board members with diverse experiences who have a passion for making their community a better place. All levels and kinds of expertise and lived experiences are welcome. Happy City St. John’s is committed to fulfilling its mission while embracing equity and diversity. We believe that all citizens’ experiences must be at the centre of the work we do and hence strongly encourage nominations from people from diverse backgrounds and different lived experiences to self-nominate.

Since we are selecting interim Directors at this meeting, it’s a great opportunity to check out whether it’s a good fit for you. If it is, you’ll be eligible to run for the normal two-year term in the Fall.

Individuals self-nominate by completing this online form. Anyone can stand for election, except for candidates or elected officials for municipal, provincial or federal office.

You will be asked to provide a brief bio which will be shared on the website and via email in advance of the general meeting to inform members who are planning on attending and voting. You will also be asked to share a little bit about yourself and why you are interested in a board role during the general (2 minutes maximum per nominee).

The election of new board members takes place at the general meeting on June 22. Members will vote following the introduction of all candidates. Candidates for election must attend the general meeting (virtually).

Contact information collected in the nomination form will only be used to reach you before the meeting and otherwise will not be shared or used. Apply via this link. Please submit your application by 2pm, June 15, 2023.
