FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Jane’s Walks returning to St. John’s on the May 3-5 weekend
April 23 , 2019
ST. JOHN’S NL – On the weekend of May 3rd, 4th and 5th, 2019, St. John’s will be one site for the international Jane’s Walk festival. Jane’s Walks are a series of informal, free and citizen-led walks where people learn about their neighbourhoods and their city. Held in hundreds of cities around the world, these walks commemorate the birthday of Jane Jacobs, an urban activist who spearheaded a movement changing the way citizens think about and engage with their neighbourhoods and cities.
Here in St. John’s, there will be over 10 walks, coordinated and promoted by urban advocacy group Happy City St. John’s.
“Jane’s Walks offer residents of St. John’s the opportunity to experience our community in new and exciting ways,” says Happy City Board Chair, Rob Nolan, “Over the past six years, we have seen a growing number of passionate volunteers lead and participate in walks and, with over ten walks and counting, this year is set to be our biggest year yet.”
Walks this year include a stroll through the Botanical Gardens to see the earliest spring blooms, an exploration of diverse habitats in a pre-settlement landscape in Goulds, a walk through unique pedestrian pathways of old downtown laneways, and a walk through Churchill Park focused on the development of this garden suburb in the 1940s
All the details for these events, including meeting points, times, duration, and difficulty are online at www.happycity.ca/janeswalks and are posted as Facebook Events from Happy City’s page at www.facebook.com/HappyCity.
