Happy City Spring Update

Hello Happy Citizens, and happy (almost) spring. We'll get there!

It's been a little while since we've dropped you all a line, so we thought we'd let you know what's on the go here at Happy City. There are a couple of things happening quite soon that should be of interest to many of you, so read on!

In this blog post:

1. City of St. John's Winter Maintenance Survey
2. Jane's Walks St. John's - May 1-3
3. Doing Density Right - Where are we at?
4. BusFest St. John's - Coming in June
5. Civic Engagement Boot Camp
6. How to get involved

1. City of St. John's Winter Maintenance Survey

Remember our "Snow Business" campaign? Hundreds of you spoke up and made a real impact on how the City of St. John's deals with winter maintenance. This year was the first run for some of the new practices, and the City wants to hear from as many people as possible about how it went. Please take a few minutes to  complete this online survey. It closes April 24, so don't delay, and spread the word to your friends.

2. Jane's Walks St. John's - May 1-3

For the second year in a row, Happy City is helping organize a "Jane's Walks" festival in St. John's over the first weekend in May. The concept is simple: Jane's Walks are free, citizen-led walking tours inspired by Canadian urbanist Jane Jacobs. The walks get people to tell stories about their communities, explore their cities, and connect free, citizen-led walking tours inspired by Jane Jacobs. The walks get people to tell stories about their communities, explore their cities, and connect with neighbours.

These walks can take any form - it could be a short stroll around a neighbourhood to tell some local stories, or a long walk through a park looking for rare birds. Right now, we're looking for  walk leaders  who would like to take people for a stroll sometime on May 1, 2, or 3. You can register and post your own walk at  http://janeswalk.org/canada/st-johns/, or just reply to this email - a couple Happy City volunteers will help get you sorted out!

3. Doing Density Right - Where are we at?

Many of you participated in Happy City's Doing Density Right survey and sessions in the Winter. We got a ton of great input - so much, in fact, that working through it all has been a big challenge! We're almost there, though, and with some student staff coming online soon, you can expect to see more conversation about density in St. John's happening this Spring.

4. BusFest St. John's - Coming in June

One of the most common topics at Happy City events for some time has been public transit - making it work, making it attractive, and making it integrated into our rapidly changing city. To help get people talking about transit, we're working on organizing a one-day celebration of public transit in St. John's, tentatively scheduled for June 12th. Look for a social media campaign encouraging people to take transit that day and tweet about it, and look for some special things happening on the buses themselves that day!

5. Civic Engagement Boot Camp

We'll soon be seeing lots of movement on the planning front - the process has begun to put together a new regional plan for the Northeast Avalon - this will have a big impact on St. John's and on our connection with other communities in the region. We also expect to see the City's process keep moving as they work through updating their development regulations, which are the rules that turn the new Municipal Plan into reality.

To help the people of the region provide feedback on these processes, we're in the early stages of planning a "Civic Engagement Boot Camp," which will be a chance to learn from experienced voices about how to approach decision-makers effectively, and how to separate out what kind of input goes where. More details will be coming soon!

6. How to get involved

Do any of the things we've just listed seem like something you'd like to be involved in? Drop us a line atadmin@happycity.ca and we'll get you on board! We're also always looking for general volunteers -  you can find a task list here on our website. The more, the merrier.

And that's it for today! Have a great one.
