City Council Meeting Rundown – June 3rd 2013 Meeting

Hello Happy Citizens!

Here's what was on the go at your council and committees last week, courtesy of the Council Agenda and the twitter play-by-play from The Scope.

1. Snowclearing: it's not over yet!

The decision whether to require businesses to clear their sidewalks was deferred during last week's meeting (the Public Works Committee had recommended a "No"), so expect to see this come up again sometime soon.

2. New Hotel for Kenmount Road

Developers proposing a new hotel at 227-229-245 Kenmount Road have asked for a municipal plan amendment to allow 6 stories there (right now the max is 4). The public meeting on it was cancelled, since they didn't get any written objections. Looks like this one is a go.

3. Wharf Expansion in Quidi Vidi

A private property owner (just down from the Brewery) in Quidi Vidi applied to extend their wharf. Staff recommended it, but council deferred the decision for next meeting.

4. Performer lineup for Harbourside Park Concerts:

The music at Harbourside Jury recommended this list of folks to play down at the popular concert series over the summer in Harbourside Park:

  • Fergus O'Byrne and Jim Payne
  • Matthew Hornell
  • The Skylarks
  • Ian Foster
  • Duane Andrews
  • Danette Eddy, Sandy Morris, and Bill Brennan
  • The Forgotten Bouzouki
  • Denis Parker
  • The Freels

5. Summer Meeting Schedules:

After June 25th, council meets more rarely until September. Mark your calendars for:

  • Monday, July 8, 2013
  • Monday, July 22, 2013
  • Monday, August 5, 2013
  • Monday, August 19, 2012

6. The city released its June economic update

A few key points:

Labour Force 114,100 (-2.1% from last year at the same time)

Unemployment Rate 6.6% ( -0.9pt from last year at the same time)

Employment Rate 64.4% (-2.0pt from last year at the same time)

Participation Rate 69.0% (-2.8pt  from last year at the same time)

Building permits were down at $106m, about half of last year at this time, but council expects it to balance out later in the year.

And… that's it for this week's council rundown!
