Happy City Summer Student Call-out!

Happy City is (hopefully!) hiring. We're applying for several summer student positions this year through various funding sources - last year we had 2 amazing summer students on our team, and this year we're hoping for 3. For one of our applications we need to have a student picked out in advance, so let us know by this Friday (May 3) if you're interested or know someone who is. 

If you're between 15 and 30 and are planning to be in school in the fall, we might have a job for you.  We're applying to the SWASP program, which pays a $1400 stipend and a $1400 tuition voucher, as well as the Student Employment Program (same deal) and the Canada Summer Jobs program (which pays the same, but all directly).

Here are the job descriptions we're working with:

1) Event Planner - Civic Engagement

Tasks & Responsibilities:

  • Building citizen engagement on municipal issues leading up to the 2013 election through a variety of in-person and online events
  • Developing and implementing marketing strategies for these events
  • Developing media releases, press kits, and other materials
  • Coordinating venue logistics
  • Developing and administering evaluations to attendees
  • Taking minutes and summarizing discussions
  • Writing reports and articles for public dissemination
  • Organizing online meetings


2)    Online Content Developer

Tasks/Responsibilities

  • Overall: Enhancing Happy City's presence on the web and on social media
  • Work with Happy City's Board to develop ideas for written, visual, and video content relevant to Happy City's priorities
  • Creating an online ideas competition to engage citizens in choosing the best ideas for municipal engagement in St. John's  
  • Creating the web infrastructure for discussion and voting
  • Research similar ideas competitions to develop voting criteria, process
  • Researching and presenting relevant ideas for dissemination via Facebook and Twitter
  • Writing blog posts on municipal issues
  • Web design for HappyCity.ca and StJohnsVotes.ca
  • Creating photo and video content to be shared via social media

 
3)   Outreach Coordinator

  • Researching and organizing opportunities for Happy City to have a presence at summer events in St. John's
  • Attending public events in St. John's throughout the summer to represent Happy City
  • Distributing brochures and other materials to build awareness of Happy City's work
  • Gathering feedback and input on municipal issues from the public
  • Summarizing and reporting on public input
  • Developing partnerships with other community groups in St. John's
